Tomino Yoshiyuki

Yoshiyuki Tomino, acclaimed screenwriter and director of TV series and feature films, was born in Owadara on November 5th 1941.
Professionally grown up under the aegis of Osamu Tezuka, master of the manga industry, he revolutions, from the second half of the 70s the sci-fi Tv Animation series with robotic themes with the trilogy Daitarn 3, Zambot 3 e Kodiu Senshi Gundam. In particular, Gundam introduces in Mecha Anime characters dense with realism and ambiguity, and above all a cry against the inhumanity of war. Gundam becomes a metaphoric reflection on contemporary society, read through the fantastic lens of a futuristic conflict. With the cult Ideon, in 1980, he reaches new peaks for the concept of spatial war and of realism in TV programmes for teenagers. With Sei Senshi Dunbine in 1983-1984 he extended his love for the Mecha and for the characteristic tragic end to the fantasy scenery. In the last years he dedicates himself to post-apocalyptic sceneries with Brain Powered (1988) and King Gainer (2002), presenting situations and characters that are substantially solar with optimistic conclusions. His latest cinematographic effort is the trilogy Z Gundam: A New Translation, where Tomino changes the end of his own saga by rewriting everything that he didn’t recognize anymore as in line with his creative thought 20 years later. Among the uncountable prizes that he has won, it’s important to mention the Best Director at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2006 (for the first film of the new trilogy of Z Gundam) and the Animage Grand Prix Awards in 1979 and in 1980 for Kidou Senshi Gundam and for Ideon.
