GARY GOLDMAN

(Animator, Member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences)

 

Gary Goldman was born in Oakland, California on November 17, 1944.  He studied Life Drawing at the University of Hawaii and graduated in 1971 with a fine arts degree in Art History.  Soon after, he was hired by Walt Disney Studios in their animation training program. One year later, he began work on Robin Hood as an in-betweener for renowned animator Frank Thomas. Within twenty-two months, he had achieved Animator status and began work on Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too (1974) and The Rescuers (1977).  Later, Goldman was promoted to Directing Animator for Pete’s Dragon (1977) and The Small One (1978).  In 1979, he co-founded Don Bluth Productions with Don Bluth and John Pomeroy. Gary Goldman has produced, co-directed and supervised post-production on twelve films and four video games including, The Secret of NIMH (1982); An American Tail (1986); The Land Before Time (1988); All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989); and Thumbelina (1994) and the hit video games Dragon’s Lair (1983); Space Ace (1983); and Dragon’s Lair II: A Time Warp (1989), Dragon’s Lair 3D: Return to the Lair (2002) and Dragon’s Lair III (2004). In 1994, Goldman went on to create Fox Animation Studios with his business partner, Don Bluth who was the creative leader of the new company.  During this era, Goldman produced and co-directed three films: Anastasia (1997), Bartok the Magnificent (1999) and Titan AE (2000). Gary Goldman continues to partner with Don Bluth under the banner of Don Bluth Films, http://www.donbluth.com developing intellectual properties for animated feature films, consulting on video game productions and giving seminars on animation production to both students and professionals. Gary Goldman has been a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1976.  He and his wife Cathy reside in Phoenix, Arizona. They have five grown children and seven grandchildren.
