12/04/2008 - Fusako Yusaki, Italy rewards her art
Each year Cartoons on the Bay assigns two Pulcinella lifetime achievements awards, one Italian and one international, to the animation world’s important personalities. The Italian Pulcinella lifetime achievements 2008 award went to Fusako Yusaki. This is Hiroshi Azuma’s, Japan’s Consul in Italy, message: "I would like to express my sincere congratulations for the Pulcinella lifetime achievements 2008 award to Fusako Yusaki. This prestigious award doesn’t only recognizer Yusaki’s professional activity, but is also a tangible evidence of Italy’s appreciation towards a deeply and profoundly sensitive artist; with great admiration and looking forward for even more success."

12/04/2008 - RAI subscribers voted for the best cartoons
15 families, RAI subscribers, coming from as many Italian regions, were invited to Cartoons on the Bay from RAI's External Communications and Relations Office to be part of the RAI subscribers Jury. The jury, divided by age groups, has assigned the following awards: Me myself and the others (5-8 years old), Tak and the Power of JuJu (9-12), Bubble & Water (13-16 years). 12/04/2008 - Young viewers reward humour
The Carta Giovani Euro<26 jury selected Sleeping Betty as Cartoons on the Bay’s 2008 winner in the best short category for the subtle irony, the paradoxical subversion of roles, the surreal Look and finally, the somewhat "feminist' element evident in the final assertion "sleep is mine and I’ll manage it". The Carta Giovani Association thanks the Festival’s organization and the Italian youth hotels association.

12/04/2008 - Lifetime Achievement Award to Gerald Potterton
The Pulcinella International Lifetime Achievement Award went to Gerald Potterton.
The Canadian Ambassador in Italy, his Excellency Mr. Alex Himelfarb, sent a few words to Mr. Potterton: "Dear Mr. Potterton, please accept my warmest congratulations for the prestigious award that the festival Cartoons on the Bay in Salerno conferred you. Cartoons on the Bay and its director, Alfio Bastianchic, have been great friends of Canada and have supported and encouraged Canadian talents over the years. The official recognition for your work’s high quality by this important festival honours us greatly. On behalf of Canada, I send my most heartfelt thank you for your career’s considerable creative achievements and for your long and constant commitment to art. 06/04/2008 - Antoniano in Bologna, 50 years together
The Antoniano in Bologna, for half a century producer of the Zecchino d’Oro, will present its new multimedia animated productions realized with the collaboration of the Istituto Scientifico San Raffaele in Milan: the preview of the Paediatrics’ Greeting Cartoon, realized by Studio Alienatio under the creative direction of Bruno Bozzetto and the interactive games of the CARTONI DELLO ZECCHINO D’ORO with the new theme song realized by de Mas & Partners.

06/04/2008 - The Festival shuttles run by the CSTP
Two coaches reserved for accredited guests, with the emblems of Cartoons on the Bay, will provide a transfer service from the city's hotels to the conference centre of the Lloyd' s Baia and the Augusteo theatre during the days of the Festival. The buses will leave every 15 minutes from 8.30 am until midnight. An on-board hostess will provide any assistance needed. The service is supplied by the Town Council of Salerno and the CSTP Public Transport Company of Salerno, a partner of Cartoons on the Bay.

06/04/2008 - At the Baia Hotel chef Mario’s creations
For lunch on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the chef of the Lloyd' s Baia hotel Mario Salvatore offers three different buffet menus for international accredited guests, with the traditional dishes of the Campania Region and the Amalfi Coast. They range from the anchovies of Cetara to troccoli pasta with scorpion fish, from clams and cherry tomatoes to paccheri pasta with provola cheeze, aubergines and basil, as well as Neapolitan assorted fried seafood served in the cuoppo. The sweets and d.o.c. wines will be from Campania and it can all be enjoyed on a splendid terrace overlooking the sea. The complete buffet costs 25 Euros.

05/04/2008 - Adult Swim, quick-witted animation for young people
Friday at 11.00 in Sala Italia Adult Swim  (the TV offer for young people, a real phenomenon in the US that has recently landed in Europe) will be presented, Vincent Sourdeau Channel Manager Adult Swim Spain and Luca Magnani senior marketing and business development Director Turner Italy will present to journalists and participants an overview of the brand and its innovative sophistcated content. Sneak preview of Robot Chicken (Entertainment in stop-motion and fierce satire, with plenty of low blows to film and music stars)  and Aqua Teen Hunger Force (cult series, absolutely nonsense: the absurd adventures of a strange trio of detectives that resemble food, created by the msot insane minds of Cartoon Network studios). At 7 p.m. the two programmes will be presented to the public in the Augusteo theatre. Strictly prohibited to children of under 14 years of age.

05/04/2008 - Sunday morning Underdog closes out the Festival
To close out Cartoons on the Bay 2008, Sunday April 13th at 10 Underdog directed by Frederick Du Chau with James Beluschi, will be screened. The canine superhero returns in a new live-action adaptation of the classic cartoon.

04/04/2008 - Special Career Award to Pietro Campedelli
Pietro Campedelli, born in Milan, fell in love for animation in the mid 1990s when he met with author and director Giuseppe Laganà. Industrial consultant, from the Bocconi University, he immediately understood that it was a field with great development potential. Campedelli, with his consultancy studio, worked on the first series Co produced by Rai Fiction among which Lupo Alberto by Animation Band and Cocco Bill by De Mas & Partners and later many others. He was a founder in 1998 and President until last December of the Associazione Aziende Audiovisivi in Animazione Cartoon Italy and Board Member of the European association Cartoon. Cartoons on the bay’s recognition is: for giving Italian animation, from a business and associative point of view, the spirit and the experience of his long and intense activity as an industrial Manager providing, in more than ten years of activity, a significant contribution to the field’s national and international development.

04/04/2008 - Paola Saluzzi and Luca Vasile will host the Pulcinella Awards Ceremony
Paola Saluzzi journalist and TV personality will host the 2008 Pulcinella awards Ceremony, Saturday at 9 p.m. in the Augusteo theatre in Salerno. Luca Vasile, delegate of Hollywood Reporter from London, well known for his interviews to movie stars during the Venice Film Festival, will help her in carrying out this duty.

04/04/2008 - Youth Card Euro <26 in Salerno
For the fourth year in a row 5 boys and girls interested in entertainment and TV communication will form a jury that will award the Youth Card Euro <26 prize. The collaboration between cartoons on the bay and the Associazione Carta Giovani to promote animation to the young audience, through direct participation to the festival, is once again renewed. Thanks to the collaboration of the association and the A.I.G. Associazione Italiana Alberghi per la Gioventù, the jurors will be staying at the beautiful 'Ave Gratia Plena' hostel in Salerno during the festival.

03/04/2008 - 15 families from different parts of Italy will be part of the Abbonati RAI jury
The RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana invited 15 families to Salerno – consisting of a young person between five and 16 years of age and an adult, chosen from the channel’s subscribers – that will become the RAI subscriber’s jury. The jury will have to view the competing programs and award a Giuria Abbonati Rai award for each age target: pre-schools, children and all ages. The initiative has been realized in collaboration with the Direzione Rai Comunicazione e Relazioni Esterne.

03/04/2008 - A cult 40 years old: The Yellow Submarine
The four boys from Liverpool weren’t very pleased with it; nevertheless the film became a cult in the 1960s, and soon became part of cinema history. Heinz Hedelmann’s pop and psychedelic style, a provocatively poor animation and the best known songs by The Beatles all pieced together with a storyline thought out by Lee Minoff paved the road for the music video clips of the 1970s and gave the audience something different from Disney’s childish universe. Cartoons on the bay, exactly 40 years after its original English release, presents this cult film. A meeting with journalist Mario Serenellini and with Gerald Potterton, friend and colleague of director George Dunning, in the cast as one of the animators, will follow. Friday April 11th at 5 p.m.

03/04/2008 - Disney for European animation
Thursday 10 at 3 p.m. in the Sala Italia Beth Gardiner, Vice President, original programming and development, Playhouse Disney and Steve Aranguren Vice President, Global original programming, Disney Channel Worldwide will be presenting some examples of creative projects still in progress and talk about the efforts that Disney is puttingo into creating a strong europen center for animated productions. Beth and Steve, that will later meet producers privately in the Disney room, follow from London the development and production of programmes for Walt Disney television in the territories outside North America, including animation for Disney Channel and the pre-school Playhouse Disney Channel.

03/04/2008 - The Augusteo Theatre
For the general public the heart of Cartoons on the Bay 2008 will be the Augusteo theatre. Kindly offered by the Municipal Authorities of Salerno for the use of the Festival, this recently restored luminous auditorium situated in the center of Salerno in Piazza Amendola. It has a capacity of 700 seats and is a part of the Palazzo di Città, an imposing municipal building that also houses the Salone dei Marmi (Hall of Marbles) where in 1944 the first Council of Ministers of the Government of National Unity were summoned.The shows are free and open to the public until all places are filled.

02/04/2008 - Pitch-me! Pierluigi De Mas Contest
Projects from authors, studios and emerging Italian producers will find their space in the “Pitch me! Italy” competition. 17 works coming from all over Italy will have the opportunity to be presented to the public and an important jury (Italian master Bruno Bozzetto, Spanish producer Sergi Reitg and Annita Romanelli of RAI Fiction) will select the three finalists running for the pitch-me! Pierluigi de Mas Award.

02/04/2008 - Rai Junior on the web: from TV to animation shorts
Just like, or perhaps even more than, other TV shows cartoons have today a very intense life on the web. The characters, the scenes, the stories become interactive and create a more direct relationship with the audience. RAI Net, with Rai Due, Rai Tre and Rai Fiction, will present its activities, explaining the characteristics and features of the many sites active today. Saturday 12th at 10. During this occasion RAI Net will announce the contest Cut Short: animation shorts for new media.

02/04/2008 - Cartoons on the Bay for schools
Cartoons on the bay has prepared a thick series of events for the schools of Salerno and its Province, among which the Cartoon Show. Six shows especially designed to present the official selection’s TV series and some previews by Walt Disney television Italy, Cartoon One, Cartoon Network and Rai Tre. Each appointment is designed for a specific age group, with an eye to cultural and educational contents.
Cartoon Show 2008 will be presented by Deneb Antuoni, a person very familiar to Rai Sat Ragazzi’s audience.

01/04/2008 - Empress Chung, Nelson Shin’s feature film Italian Preview
Akom Productions, Studio of the Year, presents the European preview of Empress Chung. Nelson Shin, in his animation feature film, adds new characters to the traditional Korean story 'Shim Chung Jeon', to escort the protagonist during her adventures. Saturday April 12th at 6 p.m. empress Chung will be on the screens of the Augusteo theatre in Salerno.

01/04/2008 - Rai Fiction at Cartoons on the Bay
RAI Fiction, partner of the event since the first edition, presents during Cartoons on the Bay its new animated productions. A true protagonist of the Italian production scene RAI Fiction has 16 programs in the festival’s official selection and 7 competing for the Pulcinella awards. Beside Acqua in bocca (all ages), the 3d series about two fish in an aquarium direct by Guido Manuli, which made its debut on Rai Due during the Christmas period, all the other series are completely new to the public. Among which Gladiators (action & adventure), directed by Maurizio Forestieri (Totò Sapore), a journey through the lands of the "Seven wonders" of the world; both nominated for best TV series for children Amita of the jungle, a new pre-school program on a girl who lives in a magical world in which animals and people can talk and understand each other, and Uffa! Che Pazienza, inspired by the drawing of Andrea Pazienza, last year’s best pilot nomination.
This year we find again competing in the “for children” category, Il mondo di Stefi, inspired by Grazia Nidasio’s stripes and winner in 2004 of a Pulcinella award for best pilot. In the latter category Tutti pazzi per Moose a new project directed by Giuseppe Laganà (Lupo Alberto) that brings us to Golden Age of Toons by telling us the story of the relationship between a clumsy and susceptible elk and a kid, was selected.
Alongside the six nominated series, we can find the 3d short film A Bicycle Trip by Lorenzo Veracini, Nandini Nambiar, Marco Avoletta, one of the diploma films produced by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia that RAI Fiction co-finances since 2003.

01/04/2008 - Friday night Italian preview Horton, U.S.A. n° 1 box office hit
Horton hears a Who! directed by Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino, with the voices of Christian De Sica, Paolo Conticini and Veronica Pivetti (Jim Carrey and Steve Carell in the original version) lands at Cartoons on the Bay. From the creators of The Ice Age, thanks to the most advanced CGI animation techniques, comes the first animation transposition of Theodor Seuss Geisel’s book. A national preview in Salerno, Friday April 11th at 9, 30 p.m.

In association with the Italian Unicef Committee, the Jury will award the Pulcinella Unicef Award for best Educational and Social Film to the program that better deals with the human being’s condition and its right to have a healthy life from a physical, psychological and cultural point of view.

31/03/2008 - Cartoons e children – A meeting with Vincenzo Cerami
When cartoons appear on TV, children immediately feel that what they see is a programme suitable for them, and parents feel quite reassured as well. However, animation today is a mature enough media to capture the attention of a very large public. As a result many successful animated series may contain, occasionally or on a regular basis, contents not suitable for children. The Italian Committee for the application of the TV Self-regulation Code and children, in association with Cartoons on the bay, promotes a meeting to further investigate, with the support of broadcasters, this problem and to identify possible solutions. The main public and private broadcasters will participate to the meeting, which will be held on Friday April 11th at 3 p.m. and will be introduced by Emilio Rossi, president of the Italian Committee for the application of the TV Self-regulation Code and minors, and by writer and screenwriter Vincenzo Cerami.

29/03/2008 - The art of Marco Biassoni at the Italian Filmlibrary Foundation in Milan
The Italian Filmlibrary Foundation, within the vast project of recovery, restoration and promotion of Italian animation films in which have brought to life again the works of Nino and Toni Pagot, Gibba, Guido Manuli, Walter Cavazzuti, Giulio Gianini and Emanuele Luzzati and many others, is now undertaking the difficult task of recovering the often neglected, if not entirely forgotten, art of one of the many artists that worked for Carosello: Marco Biassoni.
Biasson was a complete artist, a man of imagination, spiritually free, full of ideas and creativity that was dedicated to different artistic expressions. Matteo Pavesi, the curator of the Cineteca Italiana, will present the event Saturday April 12th at 3 p.m..
 

28/03/2008 - A Cartoon Show for Salerno's students
Cartoons on the Bay organized a series of events for the schools of Salerno and its province among which the Cartoon Show. 28/03/2008 - Things to put in the suitcase when leaving for Salerno
April in Salerno is usually very pleasant month but between day and evening there might be a considerable drop in temperature. You should therefore bring spring apparel along with something warmer for the cool evenings on the hotels’ terraces and on the promenade. Cartoons on the Bay’s atmosphere is rather informal, expect mostly casual clothing with the notable exception of the Awards Ceremony. For information on weather visit this site.

27/03/2008 - All to the West: Lucky Luke’s ultimate adventure, Italian premier Thursday 9, 30 p.m.
The well-known cow-boy, created in 1946 by Belgian Maurice De Bevère’s (Morris) pencil, returns to the big screen with Tous à l’Ouest: une aventure de Lucky Luke directed by Olivier Jean-Marie and released in France in the past December. In this new adventure, rich of action and humour, Lucky Luke has to deal with the Dalton gang from New York to California. Cartoons on the Bay proudly presents the film's Italian premier introduced by producer Marc Du Pontavice Thursday April 10th at 9, 30 p.m.

27/03/2008 - Opera in animation, special event Thursday 10 at 5 p.m.
Alongside Giacomo Puccini's Tosca directed by Miguel Gomez-Martinez in the Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi in Salerno, Cartoons on the Bay organized a special event in the Teatro Augusteo projecting Lele Luzzati and Giulio Gianini’s film The magical flute (1978), considered the best film adaptation from Mozart’s work and surprising Rigoletto by British director Barry Purves, in the puppets version produced by BBC in 1993. The film will be introduced by the director himself, a Jury member for Cartoons on the Bay 2008.

26/03/2008 - The press conference will be held Tuesday April 1rst in Rome
The press conference for the 12th edition of Cartoons on the Bay, the International Festival of TV Animation promoted by Rai and organized by Rai Trade in association with Rai fiction will take place Tuesday April 1rst, at 12, 30 a.m., in the Sala degli Arazzi Rai in v. le Mazzini 14, Rome. During the meeting the event’s definitive program will be presented.

26/03/2008 - The 2008 Pulcinella Awards International Jury has been announced
The International Jury of Cartoons on the Bay 2008, set to examine more than 40 programs, will assign the prestigious Pulcinella Awards to the best works competing in 8 different categories and for the Best Series, Best Character and Best European Programme, too. The jury members: Patricia Hidalgo - programming executive director Walt Disney TV, Italy; Giovanna Milano - independent consultant, France; Barry Purves - author, United Kingdom; Claudia Sasso – RaiDue children’s programming director, Italy; and Eric Shaw - scriptwriter, USA.  The 2008 Pulcinella Awards ceremony will take place in the Teatro Augusteo in Salerno on Saturday April 12th at 9, 30 p.m.. They evening event will be hosted by Paola Saluzzi and Luca Vasile.

25/03/2008 - 45 speakers will illustrate TV animation’s status
Following the MIP TV event in Cannes Cartoons on the Bay’s conference in Salerno is the perfect occasion for authors, producers, scriptwriters, TV channels, buyers, distributors, journalists and professionals to further analyze the status of international TV animation. Five sessions in three days will see 45 important personalities, of the artistic and production European, American and Asian scene, illustrating the different aspects of their most recent productions, all works that have been nominated for the Pulcinella Awards. Among the moderators: Michaela Haberlander, Christophe Erbes and Mike Robinson, outstanding personalities in the world of animation. See the list of the speakers.

25/03/2008 - Studios of the Year 2008
The 2008 Studio of the Year Awards go to: Akom Productions (South Korea) for the quality and quantity of important European and American animated series produced, including The Simpsons, and for having "supported the industrial and artistic development of American and European animation for more than twenty years, guaranteeing customers a very high qualitative standard. Its founder, Nelson Shin, is an exceptional personality in Asian animation and a tireless trait-d'union between Eastern and Western worlds."; The other award goes to Cartoon One, producer of the successful Italian series School of Vampires, for having "established itself as one of the best Italian studios in the world, a clear example of powerful imagination and entrepreneurial determination that produced successful programs and strengthened Italian animation status around the world." The Awards will be presented Saturday, April 12 at 9 p.m. in Salerno during the Pulcinella Awards Ceremony hosted by the famous Italian television presenter Paola Saluzzi.

20/03/2008 - Lifetime Achievement Awards 2008
The 2008 Pulcinella Lifetime Achievement Awards go to: Gerald Potterton, Canadian animator, three times Oscar nominee, well known for his work on The Yellow Submarine and for having directed the cult musical Heavy Metal.  The motivation:  "For taking British and Canadian animation, along with important artists like John Hales, Norman McLaren and George Dunning, through a new and unexplored path and for having established it during the second half of the twentieth century as the best art form to translate and explain the social changes and the trepidations of  young generations"; Fusako Yusaki, renowned for her commercials and shorts in plasticine, "for having chosen Italy as her elective homeland and for having honoured Italian animation with her intense and productive artistic work in which she was able to mix the well known Japanese aesthetic sensibility with the important tradition of European animation". The Awards will be presented Saturday, April 12 at 9 p.m. in Salerno during the Pulcinella Awards Ceremony hosted by the famous Italian television presenter Paola Saluzzi.

28/02/2008 - The 2008 Poster a creation of Annalisa Corsi
Cartoons on the Bay 12° edition's poster has been created by Annalisa Corsi. The artist from le Marche, formerly a collaborator of Marco Bellocchio in L'ora di religione and Matteo Cerami and Mario Sesti in La voce di Pasolini, envisioned, for a 2008 edition abounding of animated dreams, a carnival of floating lunar hot-air balloons and mysterious flying creatures. In past years authors like Luzzati, Catani, Abbatiello and Fuzellier, have represented the Festival as a place of dreams and magic as well. View the poster.

24/02/2008 - The official selection has been announced
176 programs from 24 Countries were chosen for the official selection of the Cartoons on the Bay Festival's 12th edition. 40 works, 5 for each of the 8 competing categories have been nominated for the 2008 Pulcinella Awards: TV series for infants, TV series for children, TV series for all the ages, TV series of action and adventure, educational and social film - Prize Unicef, pilots of TV series, TV special, short films. 20/02/2008 - Cartoons on the Bay is back in Salerno
Cartoons on the Bay, the International Festival on Television Animation, is back in Salerno from April 10th to April 13th. After the past edition's success, Salerno confirms its natural inclination as capital of animation. This year the traditional showcase of international television animation will not only hand out the prestigious Pulcinella Awards but also offer the city many different events and happenings for the general public.
